Pastor’s Ponderings
January 2025
During this time of year I think about Howard Thurman’s famous poem about the work of Christmas.
And this year in particular I’m thinking about how closely the major themes of Thurman’s poem echo the major themes of the Gospel of Luke, which we are about to explore as we journey through the Narrative Lectionary.
I hope that each of you has a had a wonderful and meaningful Christmas and I wish all of you the best in the coming year.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Jack
The Work of Christmas
When the song of the angels is stilled,
when the star in the sky is gone,
when the kings and princes are home,
when the shepherds are back with their flocks,
the work of Christmas begins:
to find the lost,
to heal the broken,
to feed the hungry,
to release the prisoner,
to rebuild the nations,
to bring peace among the people,
to make music in the heart.
—Howard Thurman (1899-1981)
