The Feeding of the Five Thousand

After Jesus finished teaching a crowd of people one day, he got into a boat with his disciples and sailed across the lake to have some time alone.

(I wonder why Jesus wanted to be alone?)

When they got to the other shore, they saw many people were coming to see him. He felt love for them, because he said they were like sheep without a shepherd. He told the disciples to give them something to eat.

(I wonder why sheep need a shepherd?)

“Even if we worked for a whole year, we wouldn’t earn enough money to buy food for so many people!” said Phillip.

Just counting the men, there were about five thousand people, but there were also women and children in the crowd.

(I wonder why people were so eager to see Jesus?)

“There is a boy here who has five small loaves of bread and two fish, but that can’t feed many,” said Andrew.

Jesus told the disciples to have everyone sit down. Then Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and thanked God for them. He broke the bread into pieces and gave it to the people. Then he did the same thing with the fish.

(I wonder what the little boy thought when he saw his lunch being shared with so many?)

Everyone ate as much as they wanted. When they were full, the disciples picked up the leftovers so that nothing would be wasted. The disciples filled 12 baskets with pieces of bread and fish!

(I wonder what Jesus taught the people that day?)

(I wonder if the boy told others how Jesus fed more than five thousand people with the lunch he brought that day? I wonder if he told that story over and over for the rest of his life?)
