Do you remember the story of the three little pigs? The first pig built a house of straw. The second pig made a rickety house of sticks. But when the big bad wolf huffed and puffed, he blew their houses down. The third little pig built a sturdy house of bricks. No matter how much the wolf huffed and puffed, he couldn’t blow the house down. The third pig’s house was built on a strong foundation of bricks and mortar. The bricks were stronger than the wolf.
It makes me think of a story Jesus told on a day when he’d been teaching a group of people for a long time. He’d told the people to share with the poor, to pray, to love their enemies, and many other important things. Then he said:
“Anyone who hears my words and does what I say, will be like a wise man who built his house on top of rock. When storms came and howling winds battered the house, it stood firm. When flood waters swirled around it, the house didn’t budge, because it was built on solid rock.”
“There was a foolish man who built his house on sand. When it stormed, the winds whipped sand up into the air. Rushing flood waters washed sand from under the building. The house shifted, tipped, and finally crashed down, because it didn’t have a strong foundation.”
I wonder what the word ‘foundation’ means?
I wonder if our problems can feel like storms?
I wonder what problems people are dealing with right now?
I wonder if Jesus is stronger than those problems?
I wonder how Jesus’ words can be like a strong foundation?
